Inside the town wall

The fairy tale. Round, warm, enclosed, painted soft.

The feeling: a storybook village on a sunny day; safe, warm, busy with small lives. Four zones sit inside the wall: Solengen, Møllebakken, Skumleskogen and Kysten.

A lane with two turf-roofed cottages, blue round doors with painted flower scrolls, flower tubs, bunting, apple trees and the wall's tower ahead.
The target at the game's camera: five and a half metres behind her, two above the ground.

The rules

ItemRule
ShapeCircles and soft squares. At least 70 % of a thing's edge is curved in outline. Roofs sag (ridge 3 to 8 % of its length lower in the middle), walls bulge, nothing leans, nothing is broken. Wear is moss and a polished step.
ScaleChunky and a little oversized: bench 1.2 times, lantern 1.3 times, door handle 1.5 times. Nothing over 12 m tall but the wall's towers and the windmill.
CompositionEnclosed. Something frames both sides of a street or square view, and the far view is closed within 150 m by trees, a hill or the wall. Sky at most 30 % of an eye-height frame.
PaletteThe inside palette on the numbers page. In a Solengen frame about half is green (grass, turf, trees), a third honey, cream and timber, the rest sky; accents (rose, butter, lilac, sky blue) under 10 %.
Value and saturationMedian luma 0.38 to 0.55 in the villages; mean saturation 0.40 to 0.50 (Kysten's pale sand gives 0.36).
LightLate morning to afternoon. Blue-violet shade #5A5C9A. At dusk the ground keeps its colour: tan stays tan, green stays green, only deeper.
BrushSoft, blended, strokes barely visible. No drawn line.
FolkThe same design as outside (folk): 4.5 heads, stocky, big eyes, strong brows, flat brush planes. Inside they wear lighter, warmer clothes from the zone's palette and one painted rosemaling band. The animal villagers already in the game keep their chibi look.
MaterialsHoney sandstone in round blocks with warm mortar, cream plaster, warm timber, turf with daisies, red tile, wool and linen.
DensityA story cluster every 12 to 20 m along a path; no bare paved area over 8 by 8 m without a prop, planter or change of paving. Flowers in boxes, tubs and beds along walls; in meadows, drifts of one kind.

Do

  • Dress folk in the zone's light warm colours with one rosemaling band; same body as outside.
  • Frame a street on both sides, and close the far view with the wall, a hill or round trees.
  • Put the flowers in tubs and boxes, with a lit window beside each door.
  • Let one roof material run along a street.

Never

  • A lean, a ruin, a spike, a cold colour as a base.
  • A far horizon, or a thing she cannot guess the use of.
  • A straight ridge on a turf roof (Solengen), a turf roof on the hill (Møllebakken).

Proof frames

Solengen's square at eleven in the morning with a well, a fox baker, a rabbit postman and the princess stand-in.
Solengen: the lead frame for the inside look.
Møllebakken: a cobbled street climbing to a windmill, half-timbered houses, striped awnings, a goat selling cheese.
Møllebakken: taller and tidier, still round at every corner.
The first try: brown shadows, noisy cobbles, fur strands, no ornament.
Rejected: a film render, not a painted one. Shadows were brown instead of blue-violet, and no folk ornament.

Light at the end of the day

Inside keeps its warmth after dark. Every window and six lanterns glow butter-yellow and make pools of light on the cobbles; the sky is rose and violet with the first stars; the shade is blue-violet. See rule-night-inside in the family look.
