Painted meadows in the references: sub-agent research (fetched 2026-10-01)

Three caveats. WebFetch returns pages through a summarising model, so every quote is a close paraphrase until checked against the page. Blogspot pages were read through the r.jina.ai reader proxy. Lines marked "observation" come from memory of the published art; no images were viewed or saved.

A. What each reference does

Amulet (Kazu Kibuishi)

  • [source] Line belongs to figures, paint to backgrounds: characters have "thin, single-weight outlines" and flat colour; backgrounds are "more implied than realized, with muted suggestions of detail overlayed with gradients of textured color" (Lines and Colors).
  • [source] Full background detail only in "dramatic establishing panels" (same).
  • [source] Palette per sequence: "The color schemes were influenced mainly by the mood of the sections we would be painting" (CBR).
  • [source] Work out from a midtone: "By setting down a midtone and then working away from it, you get a more cohesive looking piece" (his Copper tutorial, relayed by illustrationtuts).
  • [source] Values first, then warm against cool for the story (paraphrase, Mixed-Up Files).
  • [observation] Fields are two or three soft green bands with a light pool. Blades appear only as a ragged silhouette along the bottom edge and on hill crests. Far hills are flat blue-green shapes; flowers are sparse dots.
  • [unconfirmed] No Kibuishi statement on grass, fields or flowers found.

Nordlys (Malin Falch)

  • [source] Falch sketches and colours backgrounds; Regine Toften Holst inks and colours figures, so "figurenes konturer trer desto tydeligere fram foran de maleriske bakgrunnene" (Serienett).
  • [source] Photoshop on a Cintiq, aiming for "et mindre digitalt uttrykk, og etterligne mer tradisjonelle teknikker" (Barnebokinstituttet).
  • [source] Influences: Kittelsen and John Bauer for trolls (Empirix); Disney and Ghibli (Barnebokinstituttet).
  • [observation, low confidence] Meadows are soft gradient masses with a warm rim of light; only foreground tufts carry a thin line.
  • [unconfirmed] Nothing from Falch on grass, flowers, values or far fields.

Tangled

  • [source] A moving painting: "Kyle helped us get that Fragonard look of the girl on the swing…", a CG house "painted… so that it looked like a flat painting that suddenly started to move" (Keane, quoted by Flavorwire; secondary).
  • [source] Layer order in visual development: "a sepia layer over a minimal drawing and then opaque bright colors on top (impasto)" (Laurent Ben-Mimoun, Animated Views).
  • [source] Trees are a designed shell filled afterwards: "grow procedural twigs and leaves out to a canopy shell" (Disney, SIGGRAPH 2010).
  • [source, a blogger's analysis] Distant trees "become faint swaths of color" (Culture Mechanism).
  • [observation] Grass is rounded clumps; the lit plane warm yellow-green, the shadow cool blue-green; flowers in clusters by paths and foreground edges.
  • [unconfirmed] No grass-specific statement found.

Frozen II

  • [source] Ground cover as nested clumps: "Here's a pebble, here's a cluster of pebbles. Now, here's a ground cover that includes some leaves… then a grove… the forest" (Ernest Petti, befores & afters).
  • [source] Placed with a painterly tool, Droplet (same).
  • [source] Narrow palette: "magentas and reds, and occasionally you'll have a little lacing of yellow" (Nerdist); "a range of hues from yellow to deep maroon" (Lisa Keene, Awards Daily).
  • [source] Paths cleared for characters: "That makes our job harder because that's where our characters are" (Sean Jenkins, D23).
  • [source] "bring order to randomness" (Keene, Awards Daily).
  • [source] Characters read over vegetation: "lit it in a way that we could see the silhouettes" (Keene, Awards Daily).

Encanto

  • [source] Each flower a colour cell: "hundreds of thousands of flowers to change colors and move in kaleidoscopic patterns" (SIGGRAPH 2022 abstract).
  • [source] "deep, rich purples, blues, and other jewel tones" (D23).
  • [observation] Flower masses are one hue per patch; colour changes travel as bands.

Wish

  • [source] Depth from detail, not blur: "They don't tend to paint things blurry. They tend to paint things with less detail they don't want you to focus on and add detail where they do" (Kyle Odermatt, Keyframe).
  • [source] The far field can be one wash: "a card that had a colored wash with a bit of texture to it and that would suffice" (Odermatt, befores & afters).
  • [source] A canopy is lit as one form: "extreme shading normals" make a whole canopy light like "a simple sphere" (Yining Karl Li).
  • [source] Line is selective: modulated "based on what we want you to look at" (Keyframe).
  • [source] Distant groups "clumped into sections of color" (Avneet Kaur, Keyframe, about crowds).
  • [source] Paper texture grows with distance so it stays constant on screen (Keyframe; befores & afters).

Arcane

  • [source, trade article] Light is painted into textures; 2D matte paintings projected on simple geometry (RedShark).
  • [source] Detail softened in the background, kept where characters touch the set; lines freehand and shaky (80.lv).
  • [unconfirmed] Nothing on grass or meadows.

Klaus

  • [source] "often asking our lighting artists to simplify the shading, because making it look 'too 3d' was taking away from the simple graphic statement" (Biernacki, Cartoon Brew).
  • [source] Light in separate passes: key, bounce, ambient, occlusion, rim (same).

The Sea Beast

  • [source] A stylised sky failed: "it always looked like somebody painted the sky" (Lechner, Animated Views).
  • [source] Inside against outside: baroque "controlled gardens are the perfect counter point to the wild nature" (Lechner's site).

Wolfwalkers

  • [source] "Forest background are painted with watercolor and twicked in photoshop. Town backgrounds are done in photoshop using scans from lino cut shapes prints" (Ludo Gavillet).
  • [source] Forest masses lose their line: "blobs of watercolour, diffuse… The line was almost disappearing in places" (Almu Redondo).
  • [source] A transition zone at the forest edge: "some of the trees were angular and had more of a thick line" (Moore, VFX Voice).
  • [source] "build a strong value structure" (Gavillet).
  • [source] Muted tones in town, "very passionate colors for the wild in the forest" (Pirovano, Awards Radar).

Painting craft

  • [source] "big shapes first to small shapes last, from soft first to tight last" (Gurney).
  • [source] Four value zones: sky lightest, ground half-light, slopes half-dark, uprights darkest (Carlson, via Mitchell Albala).
  • [source] A grass field keeps a compressed value range; vary hue and saturation instead (Draw Paint Academy).
  • [source] Strokes vertical in the foreground, flattening to horizontal in the distance (same).
  • [source] In indirect light foliage is "lightest at its outer and upper edges, and darkest at its base or its core" (Gurney).
  • [source] "the warm colors tend to drop out in the distance, and the darks become progressively lighter and cooler" (Gurney).
  • [source] Cloud shadow schemes: foreground in shadow with "a patch of light in the middle distance", or "a fringe of light" in front with the shadow behind it (Gurney on Vasilyev).
  • [source] Flowers: "a mass of one shape, not a collection of dots"; "Start with the dirt — the underlying dark shapes"; avoid "polka dot meadows"; flowers go on last; masses shrink and change colour and value with distance (Karen Margulis).

C. Looked for, not found

  • Kibuishi's own words on backgrounds, grass or fields (his process videos gave no transcript; Multiversity refused; MuggleNet 404).
  • Falch on colour, grass or flowers (Empirix, NRK, Dagsavisen, Bok365, SNL, Barnebokinstituttet).
  • Keane's Fragonard quote at its original source.
  • A look talk on Frozen II vegetation (the SIGGRAPH "Effects Vegetation Pipeline" covers wind and fire).
  • Any craft source on grass, meadows or flowers for Encanto, Arcane, Klaus or The Sea Beast.
  • IndieWire, Variety, Hollywood Reporter and Animation Magazine on Wish (paywall or 403).
  • The text of Gurney's "Color and Light".
  • Any count of blooms per drift or values per meadow beyond Carlson's four zones. Such numbers in the portfolio are its own.
